Tudor dogs

In this week's Claire Chats, Claire talks about the breeds and categories of dogs that were common in Tudor times.

And here are our dogs: Baxter, a black labrador (June 2003-April 2017); Boni, who knows what (born February 2008); and Judd, Spanish mastin (mastiff) cross (born March 2015).

What a lovely “Claire chats.” I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Baxter and I really enjoyed looking at the beautiful photos of him. Boni looks adorable and congratulations to the whole family on your new arrival. I am actually quite nervous of dogs, so it was great to hear the story of him “rounding up his flock” in the mornings…How touching! I am happy for Judd that he now has a lovely new family.

Thank you, Elizabeth, that’s so kind of you to say. Baxter was a beautiful dog, such a huge part of our family, so he’s very much missed but Judd is helping us so much. It really is as if she was waiting for us, she’s so happy to be part of our family and she’s lovely.

A limer is a dog that is led on a leash out before the hunt to smell out the scent of a prey before the main hunt begins https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limer#/media/File:Limer.jpg. I also have a reference to the king of Scotland requesting limers from Henry Fitzroy. Happy to pass it on if you don’t have it.

Apologies if you have found this out already!! Thank you for a very interesting blog.
