On this day in Tudor history, 7th November 1485, the late King Richard III and his supporters were attainted by King Henry VII’s first parliament.

In the act of attainder, Richard was referred to as Richard, late Duke of Gloucester, and as a usurper. The list of others attainted for fighting against Henry at Bosworth included the late John Howard, 1st Duke of Norfolk, and his son, Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey.

Richard III and his supporters are attainted – 7 November 1485

On this day in 1485, just over two months after King Henry VII’s forces had defeated those of King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field, Henry VII’s first parliament attainted Richard and his supporters.

Here is an account from Rapahel Holinshed’s chronicle. I have altered the spelling to make it easier to read:

“For the establishing of all things, as well touching the preservation of his own estate, as the commendable administration of justice and preferment of the common wealth of his realme, he called his high court of parliament at Westminster the seventh day of November, wherein was attainted Richard late duke of Gloucester, calling and naming himself by usurpation, king Richard the third.

Was there really no chaplain available for Richard III before the Battle of Bosworth?

Thank you to William (Bill) for asking this question. His full question was: “Paul Murray Kendall’s book Richard The Third states that there was no chaplain available for services in the King’s army before the Battle of Bosworth. What does this mean? It seems incredible that Catholic soldiers would not hear Mass before going forth to battle.”

I forwarded the question to author and historian Nathen Amin, and in the meantime, I did some digging. I knew that Michael Jones said the same in his book Bosworth and that the information came from “The Crowland Chronicle”. I looked it up and found this bit in the chronicle:

Dr Susan Fern, who spoke to us last month about this very subject, was involved with the filming and it looks like it will be a very interesting programme.

I’ve included details of this festival, along with all the events surrounding Richard’s reburial, in the forthcoming edition of Tudor Life magazine which is a special Richard III themed issue (out later this week!), but I wanted to draw your attention to this festival so that you could book tickets and make travel arrangements.

The Richard III Festival is taking place in Gloucester, UK, between 6th and 14th March, and includes talks from the Greyfriars dig team and authors like John Ashdown-Hill. I hope that some of you will be able to go.

On this day in history, 2nd October 1452, King Richard III, the last Plantagenet king, was born at Fotheringhay Castle in Northamptonshire.

Richard was the youngest surviving child of Richard, 3rd Duke of York, and Cecily Neville.

Richard claimed the English throne in June 1483, claiming that his brother Edward IV’s sons were illegitimate because Edward had been pre-contracted to another woman, Eleanor Butler, when he married Elizabeth Woodville.

On this day in Tudor history, 27th September 1488, in the reign of King Henry VII, physician and surgeon William Hobbes died. He was buried in Holy Trinity Priory, Aldgate, London.

Hobbes served Richard, Duke of York, and Edward IV, and was royal physician to King Richard III. He became Master of St Mary of Bethlehem Hospital (Bedlam) in 1479.

Thank you to Şebnem for asking “Did Elizabeth of York really have an affair with Richard III?”, something which has been popularised by the “Cousins’ War” series of novels by Philippa Gregory and the TV adaptations of them.

Is there any truth to this idea? Was Elizabeth of York in love with Richard III? Did Richard and his niece become lovers? And did Richard III poison Anne Neville, his queen?

Marriages: Anne Neville, daughter of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick
Issue: Edward of Middleham. 2 illegitimate children: John of Gloucester; Katherine Plantagenet.

Richard III was born on 2 October 1452 at Fotheringhay Castle and was the youngest son of Richard, Duke of York, and Cecily Neville, daughter of the Earl of Westmorland. He became king after deposing his nephew Edward V in June 1483 and was crowned on 6 July 1483 at Westminster Abbey.
