On this day in history 24th July 1567, twenty-four-year-old Mary, Queen of Scots, was forced to abdicate and the Scottish crown passed to her one-year-old son, James, who became King James VI of Scotland. James Stewart, Earl of Moray and Mary's illegitimate half-brother, would act as regent for the boy king.
Poor Mary was recovering from a miscarriage - she had lost twins - and was imprisoned in Lochleven Castle. She was forced to sign the deeds of abdication on threat of death.
